Better Than Recycling: Freecycle

I have to tell you that when someone reaches out to me for a recycling question, it absolutely makes my day. It means that I have a reputation for recycling and therefore I might have all the answers. And if I don't have all the answers, I will almost certainly look them up because I want to maintain this reputation.

I have a new friend and her name is Jessica. Jessica married one of Matt's friends, Aaron. She actually graduated high school with Matt but I didn't get the pleasure of meeting her until she was dating Aaron. I remember seeing her at an OSU football game and I was really impressed with her for wearing orange because I knew she was an OU graduate. My first impression of her was that she was a real sport. Here's a picture that includes Jessica from the Tacky Christmas Sweater Party I threw. I really felt like I needed to point on that it was a tacky sweater party because she traditionally dresses quite nice and her sweater is the only one you can see in this picture.

Jessica is actually one of the nicest people I know. She is one of those people that is so nice that it sort of makes you feel like you're a horrible person because how can so much genuine kindness be packed into one little person?? That being said, I am trying to become good friends with Jessica because she is definitely a friend I would be lucky to have.

She sent me a text message shortly after Christmas and asked me a few questions about recycling because she had some DVD cases that she wanted to recycle and they only took #1 & #2 plastics where she lives. Fortunately, my town takes all the way through #7 plastics. I told her about an app called iRecycle that tells you where you can recycle all kinds of things where you live. I told her that when she came over for the party she could bring the DVD cases to me and I would just stick them in our recycling. I cannot tell you how happy I am that we have curbside recycling. It is the coolest thing. It is my life's mission to get curbside recycling everywhere in Oklahoma. EVERYWHERE!

Anyway, she brings them over and they are in excellent condition. She had taken all of the movie labels out and stacked them in a nice bag. I looked at them and thought "Man, it would be a shame to recycle perfectly good items like these.... I have an idea..."

There is website where you can ask for or give away any kind of item, but the only stipulation is that it is free. I believe my former roommate Abbey introduced me to this site and it is also highlighted in the book No Impact Man.  It's very much like a Craigslist for free stuff, but it has much less clutter and navigation because it's all free.

This is the home page.

Then you type in your city (or your nearest large city). I typed in Oklahoma City. Here is a list of examples that people offer or want. There's all kinds of random stuff on there. Sometimes people ask for strange enormous things like working cars and I always wonder if that works out for them. A  lot of times people post stuff like requests for gardening materials or children's clothes. There are frequent offers for old tube TVs.

One time someone asked for wine corks. I assume this was for some Pinterest project. I responded to her and told her that we were not short of wine corks around here. I use them for decorations for myself, but I am also certain there are plenty more where they came from so I offered them up. I responded to the post which linked to her email and included my generic email address to make communication easier. She lived in South OKC and I told her that since corks are light it would be easier just to mail them to her if she didn't mind giving me her address. I put them in a box that I had re-purposed from an Amazon shipment (because I mean, we have to take the recycling full circle, right?) and for a few bucks off they went. After she received them she sent me a really sweet email about the blessing I had been to her. She told me that she and her husband had fallen on some hard times and it meant so much that I was willing to go out of my way for her because the gas money to pick them up would have been hard to come by. She never told me what she was doing with the corks but I like to assume it was for some project that she was going to use them to sell in a craft fair and make some money that her family really needed. I like happy endings.

So instead of recycling Jessica's DVD cases, I thought I would post them on Freecycle just to see what happened. Remember, the order is Reduce>Reuse> Recycle... so if you can reuse something that's actually much better than using the energy and materials to recycle them.
Here's my post.

I left a post-it note on my desk to remind me to check that generic email address I have this website linked to. After a few days I started to think I was going to have to recycle them after all. Then I got an email from a very nice elderly gentleman asking if I still had them. I sure do!
He told me that he was retired and could pick them up anytime. I didn't want to give someone I didn't know my personal address so I told him to meet me at the Walgreens close to our house. A nice public place. I also had Matt and his friend follow me there on their way to a poker tournament to make sure that I didn't get kidnapped or anything.
It turned out that he was exactly who he said he was. He had his adorable little wife with him who had to have been 107 years old. I said hello, put the cases in their trunk, and was on my way. He emailed me a couple days later and thanked me since we didn't get to talk at Walgreens. He said that he had several CDs that didn't have cases that he wanted to protect. Hey, cool by me! I am glad that he didn't spend his money buying cases that I could give him, and I am also glad that these perfectly good items found a new home.

You really could post just about anything on there. I am hanging on to my egg cartons for my parent's neighbor who has her own chickens and had posted on Facebook in the past that she needed some. I am hoping that she'll give my parents some free eggs out of the deal. To her credit the last time my parents dropped the cartons off I think she did give them some. Aww... community....

I also have a box of candle holders with lids. When they're done burning I just wipe out the excess wax and after I have several I'll post them of Freecycle in case someone makes their own candles or something. Who knows?

Poor Matt. These little projects have to make him crazy. I tried to put things away in boxes in closets so he doesn't see them. One time he found my jar collection. I hang on to jars so I can give away my home made salsa and pickled okra. I will never forget him walking into the kitchen with the box in his hand. "What are these??????" "They're my jars. Put them back."

The Holidays

I had imagined that the holiday seasons would be a little less crazy when we moved back to Oklahoma. I have been known to be wrong from time to time. We did benefit from less driving, which in and of itself is enough reason to move to Oklahoma. But boy we were busy. Most of it was self inflicted. I'm not even complaining. I'm just going to show you a lot of pictures and apologize in advance that these aren't separate blog posts.

Our friend Jay came to stay with us for a month for a medical school internship. He was really helpful while he was here. We miss him already!

Matt is really handy and does stuff like climb on roofs and hang Christmas lights.

On Thanksgiving this year we had both families come here instead of Matt and I driving all over Oklahoma. It was really nice and I LOVED hosting. It was great to have every one in one place and I just enjoy getting to make use of some of our wedding gifts.

Matt, Ian, and Pistol knew to stay out of the kitchen.
 Pie display
Ian wanted to check on the Black Friday deals while we cooked. This isn't even a staged photo. Kid knows how to shop with the best of 'em.
 Our Thanksgiving Dinner. Yum!
We had a Bedlam watch party at our house because the game was in Norman this year and well, we have no desire to go to Norman. The outcome wasn't what we wanted, but we had a great time. The Cooksey's (My big) live in Houston, but thankfully were visiting Scott's family for the holiday so they got to come and bring their precious daughter, Amelia.
 Family picture!!
(And a legacy)
The Cooksey Family

A couple of days later we went out to the pond by the house and took our Christmas card. Get it? We're lumberjacks.

A couple of weeks later I hosted the first annual (I'm not sure if something can be the "first annual" but what I mean is that I hope we do this again) Tacky Christmas Sweater party at my house. I was trying to set up the timer so I could actually be in the picture (Don't I have pretty friends??)

Anna helped me get it set up...

 So did every one else...

Matt's mom gave me her old Christmas tree because it's a pre-lit tree and some of the lights went out. Being frugal like I am (Christmas trees are expensive!) and Green (recycle!) I decided that it would be really easy to just restring the lights. Matt and Jay took care of it. After a few beers and many more swear words, they got the job done. Those boys, they sure are handy. And it was beautiful!

Matt, Pistol, and I did Christmas morning a little early because we had a lot of running around to do for Christmas. Try not to be distracted by Matt's sexy camo pajamas. He's mine!

 Pistol loves Christmas
I was a baking crazy person this holiday season. Something about watching endless episodes of Grey's Anatomy (with Jay telling me how flawed their procedures are) and baking really makes it feel like the holidays. And it's also much more fun than writing papers.
We had a holiday party at my parent's house. My mom is a genius. She got Serenity a Christmas present, but she put it in the washer and somehow talked her into moving the laundry over to find the gifts. Makes me wonder how often I got tricked into chores as a child...

I love my little pirate.

My best friend- and our annual Christmas picture! I should make a quilt of these pictures when we're old so when she doesn't remember me any more she'll still know I'm a friendly face when we're making fun of the "crazy" people at the old folks home.

Joe and Matt won a family game of spades by some crazy miracle (I think they call it cheating)
 Love this kid.
Next year I hope someone will tell me that after 12 hours it's appropriate to reapply make up.
 I spoil.
I'm excited for when he gets a big kid job and buys me awesome Christmas gifts. Just kidding. He bought me a book off of my Amazon wishlist by Al Gore which I am VERY excited about.
After my parent's Christmas, we went down to Duncan for his Grandmother's Christmas.
What a classy table setting. I have a lot to learn!

Some of us like to accessorize with the table setting.
Oh, and I brought out my home made sweater because I wanted to feel appropriately dressed for the event. Grandmother told me that she hoped I didn't pay for it. Joke's on her! Making her one for next year!
The next morning was Christmas morning! Matt's sister Donna and her son Ian were staying with Matt's parents.
Ian got a new race track. This is his excited face.
We had to go get some fire wood because a big snow storm was supposed to come in. I'm more of a supervisor.

Then we went home. Matt and I didn't get snowed in like we were hoping. I did come home with an awful upper respiratory infection though! I'm now on the mend and we are headed to the big D tomorrow with Kyle and Danielle to watch the Cowboys beat Purdue!

Adventures to come!

Is Santa Taking Applications?

Is Santa Taking Applications? Because I'm about to start charging an "elving" fee. I love Christmas and I just can't help myself but be super involved in all of the happenings of the season. Not only have I done all of our Christmas shopping, wrapped every present with care (including hand made- yes I said HAND MADE BOWS!!!), baked with every ounce of Christmas spirit that I have in me, but I've also shopped for other people and sent out ideas a plenty for gifting ideas to keep every one happy. It may sound like I am complaining a little bit, but the truth is I live for this stuff.

I've been on break for a week now and I have loved every minute. I've cleaned off a lot of the DVR, as promised. I finished up my shopping. I've spent quality time with my husband. I even got to see my little Lo Lo last weekend! Last night we went to visit our friends Lonnie and Sara, and I got the chance to make up this holiday treat that was actually inspired by Matt.

I really just wanted an excuse to use this dish that we got as a wedding gift and I wanted to make something Christmas-y. So I used green apples, red apples, green grapes, strawberries, and marachino cherries and I layered them with cool whip in between each layer. I crumbled up vanilla wafers and put them in the bottom and the top to give some texture. It was deeeeelicious. And, not so full of guilt like a typical pie or something. Great food and great fellowship. 2 of my favorite things!

Continued to the next day...

Yesterday was a day and a half. I felt like superwoman, or at least got a dose of what Santa goes through every year with all of the last minute hustle and bustle in preparation for the big day. There’s little that I love more than going on a trip and then coming home to a nice clean home. So I got after it. All of the laundry in the house got washed (including all of the sheets). I mopped the floor. I vacuumed. I put everything in its place. Then, I took the box from the Craftsman toolbox that Matt got from his parents for Christmas and put it in the trunk. I then played Tetris with the Christmas gifts and strategically placed them so they wouldn’t crush the other gifts, OR smash any of my perfect (ish) hand-made bows. I’ve never been good at making bows, but somehow I figured it out this year. I honestly think that how the package looks it almost as important as what’s in the package. People like personal, pretty gifts. It’s a fact. Go look it up. In the words of my good friend Siva, “Google it, B****.” We have to be careful what we say around Siva, he picks things up quickly. (Siva is my friend in the Poli Sci program with me at Tech. He is from India and is often tickled by our American expressions. Just for the record, I didn’t teach him that one). Anyway, so I cleaned the house, packed the “sleigh,” and then I baked.

Have you heard of the website pinterest ? I have a conspiracy theory that Hobby Lobby actually invented Pinterest, because seriously, think about what their sales have to be since the development of the website. It’s out of control! Raise your hand if you have made something from Pinterest. Maybe soon I’ll do a blog dedicated to my Pinterest projects .Anyway, there’s also good cooking ideas on Pinterest. My roommate made these awesome chocolate toffee dessert things She said the recipe was on her Pinterest board “The Fat Lady Inside Me.” This thing doesn’t have many ingredients and so I decided to go for it. I should have taken pictures of what unfolded but I really couldn’t bring myself to add insult to injury. Plus, I was dealing with a crisis. I guess I had too many crackers on one tray, and there weren’t lips to the baking sheet. I don’t really know what happened, but I had this liquid caramel toffee stuff running into the bottom of my oven at a rate I couldn’t control. The smell also wasn’t fantastic. I sort of recovered some of my treat, but they don’t really look like what my roommate made. The good news is that I conquered the milestone of purchasing my first can of oven cleaner and now my oven is cleaner than I had started. That’s good news, right?

Check out all of the goodies that I made! This tray is for my Aunt. Making Christmas candy reminds me of my grandma, which I guess is why I’m so determined to do it every year despite all of the disasters. My aunt also makes Christmas candy every year and she always shows me up. I’m just glad I have someone to look up to and learn from.

I also made some treats for both sets of families.

Matt and I also did our stockings last night because we’re weak. Our Christmas day is going to be all over creation, so we wanted to do our stockings together. Here’s the pictures of our loot! Sooo fun!

PS- this is what I look like after a long day of cleaning. My apologies.

Pistol also got his! He got a rawhide candy cane that’s almost as big as he is. He keeps trying to hide it from us like we’re going to take it away from him.

Then to top it all off, I made my very first pot roast. I had to start it at 8:30 a.m. and it was finally done around 7:00 p.m. Turns out that Matt isn’t crazy about pot roast (who knew???). I thought it was delicious. We completed the meal with some of our leftovers from my holiday fruit dish. Yum!

Hope your holidays are happy and safe!
