Birthday, Easter, & Disasters

Yesterday was Matt's 27th birthday. You may have picked up on this... but I have been 27 since August. This means that for the next 4 months Matt and I get to be the same age. I enjoy these 4 months.

Since we had so much fun at the horse races when we went for date night a few weeks back we decided to go for this birthday with our families and a few friends. They have a Bricktown Brewery at Remington park and we could even get a table close to the windows and watch the races. There was even a slightly grumpy little old man right behind our table so we could make bets. I learned last night that when you want to bet win place or show on a horse you say "2 across on the (horses number)". I felt like I was a pretty big deal using the lingo and such.

My parents even came. Isn't my dad handsome? He has no idea he has participated in a selfie although he did say the word selfie yesterday but with a question mark. Parents.

It was a really nice and relaxing night (until Matt went out the emergency exit door and set off the alarm). I think I came out about even on my bets, maybe down a couple bucks. Horse races really are fun though. Anything can happen!
**I would also like to note that I am not proud of how few pictures I took of the evening. I was too caught up in winning!

Because both sets of parents were going to be in town for Matt's birthday anyway, we thought it would be a good idea to have Easter lunch at our house.  The downside was that both sets actually drove all the way home after the races because they had animals they had to take care of so they both drove all the way back today. Whoops.

My family is pretty small. After my grandparents passed way our family of 4 would often just have us for holidays. You can only eat Turkey for so many days after the event before you wish you would have had something simpler. Eventually we caught on so it wasn't really uncommon for us to have something like enchiladas or steak for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Now this is very normal for me and I even prefer it. Matt and his dad and brother went fishing at Lake Texoma a few weeks back and caught a TON of catfish and striper. They brought back the filets and we even bought a deep freeze which signifies to me that we are officially adults (the deep freeze, not the fish). We decided a big fish fry and shrimp boil would be fun because it would feed a lot of people and we already had half of the materials so we could cut down on costs. We did a test run of the shrimp boil of Friday night because it dawned on us we didn't have a clue what we were doing. Twas tasty!

Matt's dad brought up a huge stock pot for the boil and we bought a big 10 qt pot for frying the fish (which made our food savings sort of counter productive... oh well). I was in the kitchen preparing all kinds of stuff. As always, we bit off too much so we had so many different things going on at once. I'm not sure why we didn't have just a fish fry or just a shrimp boil. We don't like people to feel like they were underfed I guess. Hosting is sort of our thing. Anyway, someone gets my attention to look out the window and there's a HUGE fire coming from the fryer. Then Matt comes around the corner without a care in the world not realizing what is going on. After some mild panic and a sprint to the pantry for the fire extinguisher we got the thing under control. I can't say much for the pot the oil was in though.

I'd also like to give a shout out to Lucy because she MADE the apron that I'm wearing. That's right. I may not wear make up on Easter but I wear an apron to protect my $12 skirt.

And then moments later our house shook with a loud rattle. Oh that was just an earthquake. No big deal.

This is what a normal dinner would have looked like.

And the family sitting down to eat. My cup overfloweth. I could tear up looking at these blessings.

And due to some no-shows my refrigerator overfloweth with left overs.

Lisa made homemade cookies and cream ice cream. Holy moly. Twas delicious. Maybe the best home made ice cream I have ever had. We also have leftovers of this if you want to come over.

My mom also plays games at Easter every year. This year she put together a jar full of eggs and candy and money. Whoever guessed the closest to the amount got to keep the money. GUESS WHO WON. That's $33.47 closer to our trip to the Dominican.

After everyone had to leave Matt and I needed to relax. We were going to rent a movie but nothing looked good. We decided to go to a close movie theater to see Draft Day. I felt kind of bad because being Easter we probably should have went to Heaven is For Real or something. I feel like I want to watch that one at home because I am probably going to cry. It feels like a sit on the chair in your sweats and weep sort of movie. So, we saw Draft Day. For a girl who doesn't know much about football (and even less about the NFL) I liked it. They filmed it a little differently than traditional movies with split screens which I liked. I am also a pretty big fan of Kevin Costner. I'd say it's worth going to see for sure.

This was a wonderful weekend and a reminder of our blessings. Not only for my husband but also a very important time to reflect on the sacrifice of our Savior. Happy Birthday, Happy Easter, and remember... only you can prevent grease fires.
