By now you have figured out that Matt and I go places on the weekend...a lot. It's our own fault. We do it to ourselves. We over plan. Well this weekend we some how ended up with out plans....but we planned it that way. If you're reading this and wanted to do something, I'm really sorry. For the next four weekends one or both of us will be gone the entire weekend so we needed to stay home and just chill. And work on our house. It's getting a little out of control around here.
We have adopted a new tradition: Thursday Night Date Night.
We are trading off each week on who plans the date. I've said before, I don't think there's anything more worthy of investing in than your spouse. The dates might cost some money, but they may not either. I planned the date the first night and didn't spend much at all. I took my time and made a nice dinner and we split a cheap bottle of wine and visited and watched a Redbox movie (About Time-- how many time travel movies can Rachel McAdams be in? I wasn't a huge fan of the movie). Well Matt planned this week and decided we would go to Remington Park for the horse races. Truth be told I was a little apprehensive. I spent the entire day in Stillwater working on a paper for an upcoming conference and I would have been happy with a movie and some microwave popcorn.
We got there and they have a pretty nice set up. They have machines you can go to to make your bets. This was nice because we didn't really know what we were doing. Matt figured it out. He won several times. I however, did not.
We went to a confusing but nice dinner. We were right on the finish line at a window. You had to order a minimum of $40 with a set menu and they gave you $10 for free play and ultimately the receipt was very confusing. It was nice though and the food was pretty good.
Butter pecan cheese cake? Yes please.
Overall it was a very successful date. We tried something new and had a really good time together. I could be talked into going to the races again.
And to add to the luck, we got a St. Patricks Day card from my mom in the mail with a scratch off. We won $10! We never win! It's statistically actually ridiculous how seldom we win, but we finally won this time!
Matt gets every other Friday off which means I typically take every other Friday off because he is too distracting. Ever since we picked this house out there is part of our room that I have wanted to turn into a reading area with a chaise lounge. I just had to wait until the right time to buy a new piece of furniture. Lucky we won that $10 right?
So here is the before of the potential reading area. Matt's dresser is all the way across the room. It looks okay but it's sort of awkward.
And here is the before with my dresser under the TV. I don't care for this. Matt moved the furniture one day because he was mad at me for forgetting the empty the compost bin under the sink.
So here is the after when we moved Matt's dresser to under the TV. MUCH better.
And here is my new reading area. I love it. I have sat there every day. I also got a little stand and lamp from Hobby Lobby to complete the set up. I need a nice throw blanket but I need to win a few more scratchers. Until then I'll use Matt's 57 year old Dallas Cowboys blanket.
In our search for a lamp and table we did make an impulse buy of this orange Rachael Ray pan. It is separated into two parts so you can make catfish and hushpuppies (or whatever) at the same time. $17 on clearance? I accept!
And after the fun of furniture shopping we had to get after chores. Matt had some serious problem with the ridiculously tall grass that covered the cable boxes. He better be right in his prediction that it will grow back this spring or he is going to be in trouble.
And while Matt was doing that, I was raking leaves in the back. And yes I have pink John Deere working gloves.
And sometimes you have to use your body weight to mush yard clippings down so you can take them to the dump.
On Saturday I did not leave my home. I spent a large part of the day grading...I don't love grading. It takes too long. The majority of students don't seem to care and that's frustrating.
We watched 12 Years a Slave. It was a good movie but it was also sad. It's unbelievable what people are capable of doing to each other.
On Sunday we made it to church which made me really happy. So often there is one reason or another that we don't make it to church. The message was incredible and extremely interesting. Sometimes a message hits you right between the eyes, and this one was one that I needed.
And then we ate Sushi at Cafe Icon in Edmond. It was a little pricey but it was completely delicious. Perhaps the best I have had in a very very long time.
And we went to see Matt's grandma. We brought her the gift that Matt's sister got her for Christmas. This is shameful on so many levels. It was really nice to see her though and I think she enjoyed us dropping by. She is a really nice lady. And then we went to Braum's.
We are also putting together shirts to make sorority/fraternity t-shirt quilts. There's really nothing else that can be done with all those shirts. So many shirts. Once upon a time I thought I was going to sew a t-shirt quilt myself. Then I realized after cutting up several shirts... I have no idea how to sew! Luckily Matt's sister-in-law (which now makes her my sister-in-law too, right?) is an extremely gifted seamstress... so we are going to pay her to make them. As you can see, Pistol was eager to help.
Overall it wasn't the most eventful weekend but gosh it was nice to be home. Our house is MUCH more in order and it really needed it. I didn't start the week worn out. I even took care of the majority of my paper today for my upcoming conference. I got to just hang out with my hubby. We didn't have to fill up the gas tank once. We should do this more often!
Maybe in May.
